About the art project ‘The Lion Gate’

The artwork uses the location of the street; near the Westerpoort, the gateway to Amsterdam, from the west, with the history of destruction and reconstruction of the districts. Jasmijn Visser drew lines across the columns that can be interpreted as a framework to a lion’s foot. Linked to the Lion Gate of Mycene and the Westerpoort, the lines have been applied as murals on the entrances and individual gates of each building. From every angle in the street, an unique transformation can be seen.

In close cooperation with Ymere and Jasmijn Visser, Iwaarden provided paint technical advice, took on the project management, digitized the drawings, manually applied the murals (with a surface of more than 800m2) and painted them in 2 colour tones.
