Salone Di Mobile Milano is the design fair that takes place annually at the end of April at various locations throughout the Italian city; Milan. We stayed at hotel nHow; a colourful place where you can start your day full of inspiration. The hotel is an inspiring environment, where your senses are stimulated. In the same area as the hotel, you could also find Tortona Rocks. Our first meeting with all the design to come in the next few days.
On this first day, we enjoyed a drink in the beautiful ‘Palazzo dei Giureconsulti’, a building that offers a magnificent view of Duomo di Milano, the cathedral of Milan. This 16th century building is the setting for the collections of many Dutch designers and companies. Nicole Uniquole, initiator and curator of this event, shows with Masterly – the Dutch in Milano – a varied and inspiring design field of architects, furniture, textile- and construction companies, designers, craftsmen, galleries and vocational schools for design and interior. As we couldn’t believe what we saw, we decided to come back the next day.
After a delicious breakfast we hopped on our bike towards the creative and rebellious neighbourhood of Isola for the Isola Design Festival of the same name. Along the way, we passed cool murals and the green ‘Bosco Verticale’, Italian for ‘vertical forest’…an impressive design by Stefano Boeri; two green residential towers with about 800 trees and 20.000 plants. In this appearance they take over urban life, as it were.
In this district we visited the Isola Design Gallery with many Dutch designers, for example our favourites Rive Roshan, Mo Man Tai, Studio Thier en van Daalen and Coloruben. Then we drove to Circolare in the Palazzo Lombardia, a covered square where the Circulair Village was located, as a part of the Isola Design Festival. The square was packed with sustainable design from, for example Beton-Lab and studio Mast Circulaire Design.
We were close to the stylish Porta Venezia district. MOOOI presented itself here. As soon as you hear MOOOI, you know it; you have to experience this legendary brand. We stepped into an inspiring and seductive world of unexpected and innovative designs. Upon entering, an experience triggered us to compose an own, unique scent, by using the modern technique of ‘artificial intelligence’. A sensory experience with a wonderful perfume as a result. Also nice; what we experienced at MOOOI can also be seen online. Experience the presentation of MOOOI via a digital tour.
Then, we cycled to Masterly. THE place for Dutch Design that we had already visited on day one. We took the time to immerse ourselves in a Dutch experience with brands such as Vonn Jansen, Aptum Lightning and innovative design by Robert van Embricqs.
We had to enjoy and experience this day to the max and therefore also visited Poltranova, where Mosca Partners promote Italian creativity. The entrance of this building attracted us most. Design Studio Van Zaven had made an impressive installation, called ‘Breath’. They had created a vacuum, making the wall breath in and out calmly, like a heartbeat. With the message ‘ Object speaks. Poems act.’ We ended the day and cycled back to our hotel.
After a good night’s sleep, we were ready for our third and final day. In the Alcova district, a former slaughterhouse (!) was a great setting for the Fuorisalone. This almost apocalyptic location provided a perfect contrast with the fresh modern design. The nicest thing about the Fuorisalone were the innovative solutions of the relatively small and upcoming designers. The Basketclub offered well-known work. We almost spent our entire day at this location…the clock was ticking and we didn’t want to miss our flight, so again we had to hurry, cycled to the hotel, grabbed our baggage and flew – tired but satisfied - back to Amsterdam Airport.
We still enjoy all the beautiful things we saw at the Salone Di Mobile Milano! Fortunately, we still have the pictures and you can see them too. Curious? Check our Instagram account in the highlight ‘Milaan ‘23’ for all images. Milan; see you next year!
